Parques de Amor

by Seth Lykins

Kissing. Kissing. Hug, hug.
Smooch. Tongue, lips, mouth.
Cuddle. Cradle. Rock.
Kiss, kiss. Hug, hug.

And so goes the public parks of Santiago. Filled with couples, parks are home to an ocean of public displays of affection. This is caused by the living situation shared by most inhabitants of the city. Most people in Santiago live in close quarters with their families and are unable to have much privacy; thus, couples swarm the parks with their love. PDA is seen everywhere and is an extremely accepted practice. Upon first arriving here, seeing this mass of public loving was a surprise. Boys kissing girls (and vice versa) all over the parks. But, once accustomed, I've grown fond of seeing such open affection. In the U.S, it is considered rude or gross to publicly and physically engage with an amorous other. That seems so counter-intuitive, though. Kissing, cuddling, and making-out is an extremely natural propensity for couples. So, why not indulge in this natural desire! And why not in public!

Keep the kisses coming, Santiaguinos. Keep ‘em coming.
